The Essentials of Security Guard Training



Applying to become a security guard is a full-time commitment to what could be a lifelong career. Although it’s rarely ever that you would be required to save lives, but there are significant risks associated with becoming a security guard. You will have to commit to further studies, hours of training and annual trainings throughout the year. The state of California enforces some rather strict regulations which govern the provision of licenses to anyone looking to become a security guard. You will also need to apply for separate permits to carry batons, firearms and tear gas. In specific, the requirements to become a security guard are as follows:

Requirements To Become a Security Guard

The Bureau of Security and Investigative Services in California has clearly outlined some minimum requirements that people must meet to become security guards. These include: 

1. Applicants must be 18 years of age at least.

2. All applicants will undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice.

3. People must complete the Power to Arrest training. 

4. 32-hours of training in security officer skills must be completed within 6-months of registration. 

5. 8 hours of continuing training must be completed annually. 

6. The training must be provided by the guard’s employer Private Patrol Operator or by a Bureau-approved course provider.

The Process


Once you’ve registered for a license, you are expected to complete 40 hours of training within the first 30 days of getting your license. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of your license. The process begins with a pre-training session that teaches aspiring security guards about WMDs and the power to arrest. 

Once the pre-training, lasting for 8-hours is over you have are trained across 4 core areas of study which include:

· Public relations

· Observation and Documentation

· Communication

· Legal Aspects

Then you can take on electives depending on your area of interest or which aspect of security provision you wish to get involved in. This part lasts for a total of 32 hours and afterwards you may apply for teargas, firearm and baton permits after going through training with the respective bureau approved training centers.
